I have painted this particular nest box in the past, but since then have gained a lot more experience. I remember really enjoying painting this one last time so I decided to do it again and will be entering it into the Spring Show at our gallery here. It's Pastel 11" x 14" on Fisher 400 paper.
Fisher paper is totally archival with excellent tooth and is wonderful to work on. The pastel really clings to the paper with very little dust.
In March 2008 I made the suprising discovery that I had a little artistic talent which had been lying dormant all my life. I started with simple still life subjects but as time went on I progressed to more complex subjects. The only medium I paint in is pastels which I love. They do tend to be messy but I love the immediacy of the work, involving no mixing with turps or water, just pure pigment directly applied and mixed right there on the paper. Carol Conrad

A Quiet Corner in New Orleans
Our gallery change this month has the theme of Midnight Hours and I chose this photo. I have never painted a night scene before, so this was really breaking new ground for me. This photo of the actual artwork doesn't really show it to it's best advantage, but I decided to post it here anyway.

Fields of Red
Sometimes I just want to paint a picture with a lot of color and I came across this one which seemed to fit the bill.

Clinging to the Edge
This is from a photo that I took when we went for a short hike on top of Black Mountain, a short distance from where we live. It's always amazing to me that vegetation can grow out of seemingly hostile environments. The view from the top of Black Mountain is beautiful, though you do have to be a little choosy when picking your viewpoint to avoid the tree tops from below.

Garlic
I have been a little slow in posting paintings of late, it seems I paint them and it takes a couple of weeks (at least) for them to get photographed and posted in my blog. I don't do a lot of still life pictures but now and then I feel the urge to give it a go, as was the case with this one. It always seems that the photo's don't accurately reflect the painting. But it's close. This one is 11 x 14 on Richeson Pastel Board.

Sunrise at the Shore
I have been fascinated recently with painting waves. I did a couple of small studies in my studio and then did this full scale one. It was really fun to do and I plan to do more like this.
This one is 16 x 20 Pastel.

Jasper, Alberta, Canada
How gorgeous is this spot!!! Unfortunately I have never been there and the photo from which I painted this was taken by a friend, but I loved it and couldn't wait to get out my pastels and do my interpretation of the scene. It's 16 x 20 Pastel.
